Yoga Aid Challenge raises $50,000 for Save the Children

At sunrise on Wednesday 10th October, more than 300 people across Australia saluted the sun and took part in the 2007 Yoga Aid Challenge.

More than $130,000 has been raised for four children’s charities, with participants selecting which of the charities they wished to raise money for.  Approximately $50,000 of the total donations has been raised for Save the Children.

The event was the first of its kind to be held in Australia, in over 20 locations across the country, with individuals registering to participate and raising money by asking friends and family to sponsor them.  The challengers performed 108 salutes to the sun (not an easy feat!) to raise funds for children’s charities and highlight the benefits of yoga. .

The Sydney event, held against the backdrop of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House, attracted over 250 people and featured during the weather segments on Channel 9’s Today morning show.  The donations continue to flow in, so thank you to everyone for their generous support!  Donations are open until 9 November, so it is not too late to show your support and help raise money towards Save the Children’s important work.  Visit www.yogaaid.com to donate.  The charity with the highest individual fundraiser will receive an extra $5000.

What are Sun Salutations?

Sun salutations are a form of paying homage to the Sun:
• The Sun is 108 times the size of the Earth
• The distance from the Earth to the Sun is 108 times the size of the Earth

• The distance from the Earth to the Moon is 108 times the size of the Moon
• There are 108 beads to a Mala

Why at Sunrise?

Sun energy has an empowering effect:
• The Sun and our hearts have the same electromagnetic energy fields
• As the Sun is to the Solar System, so is our heart to our bodies
• Sun energy feeds and opens the heart (faith) and the solar plexus (courage)
