Aboriginal leader and former ALP National President, Warren Mundine, today joined the Board of Save the Children Australia.

Mr Mundine stated that he was “enormously pleased to join the world’s largest independent child rights agency.” He added that “as a father of seven children, it is something I feel very passionate about.”

Mr Mundine, who grew up in regional NSW in a family of 11 children explained “we were poor growing up, and often went without, but I never stopped believing that the world was my oyster.”

“I believe that every child should have the right to feel this way, and this belief is very much in line with Save the Children’s objectives.”
“I’m looking forward to working with the organisation in tackling the many issues that children today are facing, especially those in our own backyard and across indigenous Australia.”

Warren Mundine is one of Australia’s most prominent Aboriginal leaders, and brings to the role strong administrative and public policy expertise, unique insight and an innovative approach to indigenous issues.

“Improving the lives of disadvantaged children in Australia and our wider region has never before been more important, so we are delighted to have Warren join with us in leading Save the Children into the future,” said Brian Hartzer, Chair of Save the Children Australia’s Board of Directors and ANZ’s Chief Executive Officer, Australia.

“Warren’s many achievements to date are admirable, and his skills and experience will be a great asset to the organisation.

“One of Save the Children’s key priorities for the year is to further expand our domestic programs within indigenous communities, and Warren’s knowledge and expertise in this area will be invaluable. Together with our new CEO Suzanne Dvorak, Warren’s appointment puts us in a strong position for renewal and growth. ”

Warren Mundine’s appointment as Board Member will become effective from 28th May, 2009.
