Romanian children join the ‘World’s Biggest Lesson’, World Record attempt

More than 1.500 rural children in World Vision Romania's projects took part in The World's Biggest Lesson event, organized within the Global Campaign for Education Action Week. This initiative is a record breaking attempt to be registered in the Guinness Book of Records and wishes to draw the attention of world leaders, politicians and general public on the education for all issues.

Joining millions of children, teachers, parents and social activists from more than 100 countries all over the globe, the half an hour lesson gave children the opportunity to learn about the education for all goal, express their concerns and in the end, create messages for the decision making leaders of the world, politicians and local authorities representatives.

Two witnesses participated in the lesson and certified the lesson followed the general rules and signed the participation sheets.

'World Vision Romania fully encourages initiatives aiming to promote and support children's education and access to quality education' said Ms. Nina Petre, Director for Integrated Ministry and Strategy for World Vision Romania.

'Today, children and teachers from more than 20 rural communities and a city where World Vision Romania works have been encouraged to be part of the World's Biggest Lesson event, which is a wonderful way to express solidarity with millions of other children all over the world who cannot benefit for this fundamental human right. World Vision Romania believes education is an important instrument by which poverty can be alleviated', added said Ms.Petre.

A UNICEF report entitled „Education for some more than for others' show that 14 million children from Eastern Europe and former Soviet Union countries enter the adult life without being enrolled in any formal education and without having a school graduation diploma.

One of the places where the event took place was school „Simion Barnutiu' in Cluj – Napoca, a city North Western Romania. 293 children from this school enjoyed taking part in this awareness event and created messages they would want to send to local and national politicians.

'All the people have the right for education. We would like you to travel all over the world to see how many illiterate children there still are in the world!'. 'All the people have the right to know how to read and write. In a very short period of time, we, children, would be able to change the world if we want!', were some of the messages expressed during the event.

In Romania only 24. 54 % of Romanian children continue high-school or vocational studies.
World Vision Romania actively promotes access to quality education for children. More recently, a World Vision Romania fundraising campaign was launched under the slogan 'I want to be in the ninth grade!' to encourage individual Romanian donors to support rural children coming from families with no financial means to continue high-school.

The 'Let's learn with 2%' campaign', underway now in Romania is also in support of education.

This year, the slogan of Global Campaign for Education Action Week was „Education for all – stop exclusion!' This international movement aims to mobilize the public opinion and determine governments and international community to keep the promises they've made in Dakar, back in 2000, to ensure quality, free, compulsory education for all. Since it began in 1999, 18 million people and thousands of organizations in over 100 countries have come together as part of GCE, calling for Education for All now. Five million children are expected to take part in the World's Biggest Lesson event!
