Dec 2 (Reuters) - The death toll from political violence in Algeria fell to eight in November from 13 in October and 31 in September, according to a Reuters count based on newspaper reports.

Six rebels, a mayor and a former member of government forces were killed in the north African OPEC member country last month.

Following are some of the main developments:

Nov. 12 - El Watan reported that a senior police intelligence officer in Algiers has been suspended from duty while an investigation is under way into the possibility that another police officer had links with the al Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb.

Nov. 20 - El Watan daily reports that a rebel support network was dismantled following the killing on Oct 30-31 of a notorious rebel who had been hunted since 1997.

Nov. 23 - Newspapers said the al Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb was experiencing difficulty posting propaganda messages on the Internet because of the dismantling by security services of the sites it normally uses. As a result the group resorted to staging impromptu checkpoints and handing motorists pre-prepared video CDs of its attacks, newspapers said.

Nov. 24 - Libyan authorities have begun attempts to persuade a number of Libyan nationals in Algeria, thought to have become members of the al Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb, to give up violence and return home, Algeria's El-Khabar newspaper reported. Leaders of Libyan militant groups currently in prison in Libya were said to be playing a role in the effort, according to the newspaper.

Nov. 26 - Rebels suspected of links to al Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb, al Qaeda's North African wing, extorted money from several people and set fire to an ambulance at a fake roadblock in Tizi Ouzou province, 100 km (62 miles) east of Algiers.

Nov. 29 - The army killed a rebel and seized a Kalashnikov rifle in an ambush in Batna province, 430 km (268 miles) east of the capital Algiers.
