TUNIS, May 8 (Reuters) - A Tunisian court sentenced 14 people to up to 14 years in jail for attempting to make a bomb, their lawyer said on Thursday. "The court decided to jail 14 suspects, among them students, on charges of attempts to manufacture a bomb to be used for a terrorist attack," defence lawyer Samir Ben Amor said. He gave no details of the attack the 14 were said to have been plotting. The court's verdict was announced late on Wednesday, he added. The government in Tunis has cracked down on suspected al Qaeda sympathisers since the 2001 attacks on the United States. Lawyers say more than 1,000 people have been arrested since 2003, including several people suspected of recruiting fighters for al Qaeda in Iraq. (Reporting by Tarek Amara; Editing by Janet Lawrence)
