ROME, April 23 (Reuters) - Three people were killed when a series of explosions shook a fireworks factory on the outskirts of the southern Italian city of Naples, police said.

The blasts sent body parts flying hundreds of metres and shattered windows at a nearby restaurant, ANSA news agency reported.

Witnesses told the news agency the explosions could be heard several kilometres away, with one resident saying she feared the nearby volcano of Vesuvius had erupted.

The victims included the owner of the plant, his grandson and a factory worker, police said. Thirty people were taken to hospital with respiratory problems, ear pain and panic, ANSA said. The cause of the blasts were not known.
