CHRONOLOGY-Major bomb and grenade attacks in Pakistan

Nov 8 (Reuters) - A suicide bomber killed 35 Pakistani soldiers on Wednesday at an army training ground in a northwestern area known to be a stronghold of an Islamist militant group.

Following are some of the major bomb and grenade attacks in Pakistan in recent years. Most are believed to have been carried out by sectarian or al Qaeda-linked militants. Numerous smaller attacks have also taken place.

March 17, 2002 - An attacker throws grenades inside a church during a Sunday service in the diplomatic quarter of the capital, Islamabad, killing five, including a U.S. diplomat's wife and daughter.

May 8 - A car bomb outside the Sheraton Hotel in the southern city of Karachi kills 14 people, including 11 French engineers.

June 14 - A car bomb outside the U.S. consulate in Karachi kills 12 Pakistanis.

July 4, 2003 - Up to 47 people are killed in a suicide bomb attack on a Shi'ite mosque in the southwestern city of Quetta.

Dec. 25 - A suicide bomb attack on President Pervez Musharraf's motorcade kills 15. He is unhurt. He escaped a similar attack on Dec. 14.

March 2, 2004 - At least 44 people are killed when suspected Sunni militants attack a Shi'ite procession in the city of Quetta with grenades and guns.

May 31 - A blast in a Shi'ite mosque in Karachi kills 20.

Oct. 1 - A suicide bomber in a Shi'ite mosque in the eastern city of Sialkot kills 25.

Oct. 7 - At least 40 people are killed when a car bomb explodes at a rally in the city of Multan commemorating the assassination of a Sunni Muslim leader.

March 20, 2005 - Forty-three people are killed when a bomb explodes at a Shi'ite Muslim shrine in southwestern Baluchistan province.

May 27 - Nineteen people are killed in a suicide bombing at a Muslim shrine in Islamabad.

May 30 - Five people are killed in a suicide bomb attack on a Shi'ite mosque in Karachi. Six employees of American fast-food franchise KFC are burned to death in a riot that follows.

April 11, 2006 - Fifty-seven people are killed in a suicide bomb attack on a Sunni Muslim congregation gathered in a Karachi park to celebrate the birth anniversary of the Prophet Mohammad.

Nov. 8 - A suicide bomber kills 35 soldiers at an army training ground in North West Frontier Province.
