BANGKOK, April 9 (Reuters) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said there would be a public holiday on Friday to help the government cope with the effects of political protests that caused traffic chaos in Bangkok on Thursday.

The anti-government protesters have also threatened to disrupt an Asian summit in the Thai resort town of Pattaya starting on Friday, which he said would go ahead as planned.

In an address to the nation, Abhisit asked both government officials and the public to cooperate in maintaining public order. (Reporting by Vithoon Amorn; Editing by Alan Raybould and Paul Tait)
