BRUSSELS, May 25 (Reuters) - European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana on Monday condemned a nuclear test carried out by North Korea, saying it further threatened regional peace and security in northeast Asia.

"These irresponsible acts by North Korea warrant a firm response by the international community. The European Union will be in contact with its partners to discuss appropriate measures," Solana said in a statement.

The test was a "flagrant violation" of a U.N. Security Council resolution, the statement said.

North Korea conducted an underground nuclear test on Monday, heightening tension in the economic powerhouse of East Asia and prompting U.N. Security Council members to call an emergency meeting. (Reporting by Dale Hudson)
