COLOMBO, Dec 7 (Reuters) - Tamil Tiger rebel artillery fire hit a school in the island's northeast on Thursday, wounding 10 students -- two of them seriously -- the military said.

The rebels were not immediately available for comment on the attack in the eastern district of Trincomalee, which comes a day after President Mahinda Rajapakse announced a crackdown on the Tigers and their supporters.

It was not immediately clear how old the students are.

More than 3,000 civilians, troops and rebel fighters have been killed so far this year as a new chapter in the island's two-decade civil war deepens.
