SRINAGAR, India, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Two Indian paramilitary police officers were killed and eight others wounded on Friday when their vehicle ran over a bomb planted by suspected separatist militants in Kashmir, police said. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which took place near Sangam town, 40 km (25 miles) south of Srinagar, summer capital of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. A police official said damage to the vehicle had been substantial. Of the injured, five were in a critical condition. Rebel violence has increased in the Himalayan region in recent months as it is easier for militants to trek into Indian Kashmir from the Pakistani side in the summer when snows melt, officials say. More than 42,000 people have been killed in Kashmir since a revolt against Indian rule broke out in 1989, officials say. But human rights groups put the toll at about 60,000. India accuses Pakistan of aiding the militants, something Islamabad denies.
