SRINAGAR, India, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Suspected Islamist militants launched two grenade attacks in Indian Kashmir, including one near a mosque during Friday prayers, killing four children and wounding about 60 people, police and witnesses said.

Many of those hurt in the blast near the mosque were also children, going to weekly prayers with their fathers.

The attacks come days before top officials of India and Pakistan resume peace talks that aim to resolve decades of enmity between the South Asian rivals, largely centred around the dispute over Kashmir.

The first attack took place near a mosque in Pulwama district, south of Srinagar, summer capital of the revolt-torn Jammu and Kashmir state, mainly Hindu India's only Muslim-majority state.

Witnesses of the attack in Tahab village said the blast caused carnage and the dead included two girls and two boys. All four were aged between 10 and 12.

"As soon as I entered the mosque, there was a loud explosion outside. I thought the mosque would fall down," said Nazir Ahmed.

"When I ran out, I saw people writhing in their own pools of blood and screaming in pain,"Ahmed said, his grey-coloured clothes stained with blood from the wounds of people he said he helped take to hospital.

Reuters witnesses saw children covered in blood being taken to hospital and crying in pain while their mothers beat their chests in desperation.

Police blamed Kashmir's frontline rebel group, Hizbul Mujahideen, for the mosque attack. But the group in a statement sent to newspaper offices in Srinagar denied responsibility and blamed Indian security agencies for the blast.

Hours later, a second grenade attack took place in the heart of Srinagar city, wounding two policemen and three civilians.

Indian officials say there has been a fall in separatist violence this year in the Himalayan region, where a revolt against New Delhi's rule has killed more than 45,000 people since it erupted in 1989.

However, Islamist militants continue to sneak into the disputed region from Pakistani territory despite a commitment by Islamabad to stop them, they say. Gunbattles and grenade blasts are also a regular occurence, despite a decrease in killings.

The Indian and Pakistani foreign secretaries are due to hold talks in New Delhi on Nov. 14 and 15 to push their slow moving peace process launched in January 2004.
