NEW DELHI, Sept 16 (Reuters) - India's Foreign Ministry has asked local government officials to stop asking foreign countries for help, saying such requests are embarrassing, local media reported on Sunday.

The ministry said there had been several cases of ministers in state governments writing directly to foreign countries to ask for aid, the Sunday Express reported on its Web site.

"Some of these communications have caused embarrassment and were not acted upon by the foreign governments, who sent them back," the ministry said in its letter to state governments, the newspaper reported.

Junior officials in the central government have also been breaking the rules which ban communication with foreign countries and multilateral agencies without clearance from the ministry, the letter said.
