New Delhi landlords held in anti-terrorism drive

NEW DELHI, Jan 16 (Reuters) - Nearly 40 landlords have been arrested in New Delhi for failing to provide details about their tenants as part of a drive to root out suspected terrorists before Republic Day next week, police said on Tuesday.

The growing migrant population in the sprawling city of 14 million has prompted police to check tenants' identities with landlords, who by law have to provide the details. They said 39 had been arrested for failing to comply.

"These arrests were made in the last 24 hours," police spokesman Rajan Bhagat told Reuters.

"They are a part of the intensified anti-terrorist drive ahead of our republic day," he said, adding that this was preventive and there was no specific threat of an attack.

Republic Day on Jan. 26 commemorates the adoption of India's constitution 56 years ago and is a national holiday and is marked by parades, events and ceremonies in many cities.

During Republic Day last year, Maoists set off bombs in eastern India, killing at least two people.
