GUWAHATI, India, Jan 21 (Reuters) - A bomb exploded outside a railway station in India's restive northeastern Assam state on Sunday, injuring two people, a senior police official said. The explosive was hidden in a motorcycle in the parking area of the New Bongaigaon railway station in western Assam, 120 km (75 miles) west of the state's main city, Guwahati, said the official who declined to be identified. Police blamed rebels belonging to the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) for the attack. In another incident, suspected ULFA militants shot dead a ruling district-level Congress party leader in Digboi town in eastern Assam late on Saturday night, police said. Violence has flared in oil- and timber-rich Assam in recent months after talks between representatives of the rebel group and the Indian government failed to make headway last year. Two people were killed and seven hurt when a bomb exploded in a market in northeastern Assam on Saturday while two died and 10 were wounded a day before in a blast in a Guwahati bus station. In the worst attack in recent years, 72 labourers, who were not from the state, were killed by suspected ULFA militants earlier this month, prompting a visit to the region by the prime minister. The ULFA revolt -- aimed at Assam's independence from India -- has killed more than 20,000 people since it began in 1979.
