CHENNAI, India, July 4 (Reuters) - A 15-year-old Indian boy accused of illegally performing a caesarean operation because his parents wanted to set a record surrendered on Wednesday to a juvenile justice court, his lawyer and police said.

His parents, both doctors in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, were arrested last month after an inquiry found them guilty of medical malpractice for allowing the boy to conduct the surgery to win a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The boy gave himself up in his home district of Tiruchchirappalli, some 400 km (250 miles) south of Chennai, capital of Tamil Nadu.

"He was produced before the board which released him on bail," the boy's lawyer, S. Venkatasubramanian, told Reuters. The juvenile board functions as a court for minors.

The boy's parents are in jail, and all three could be charged with manslaughter, endangering the life of a person, cheating and destroying evidence. They could face up to seven years in prison if convicted.

The boy, if found guilty, will be sent to a juvenile detention home as no one under 18 can be sent to a jail.

The couple are believed to have obtained the patient's consent for the successful operation carried out by their son by telling her she would be operated on by a surgeon.
