NEW DELHI, Feb 20 (Reuters) - Ten students and three teachers on a school picnic were drowned and 17 people were missing after their boat capsized in southern India on Tuesday, police said.

The incident took place on the Periyar river in the Thattekad area of Kerala state, about 55 km (35 miles) east of the commercial hub of Ernakulam.

More than 100 students from a district school had gone on the picnic and 40 of them went for a ride on the boat which capsized, R.D. Chandrashekar, a state police officer, told Reuters by phone from Ernakulam.

"Ten boys swam to the shore and we have got the bodies of 10 children and three teachers," he said. "We hope there are more survivors as some of them could have swum to the other shore."
