CHITTAGONG, Bangladesh, March 20 (Reuters) - At least 300 people became ill after attending a Muslim religious feast in Bangladesh on Tuesday, police and doctors said.

The feast, known as Ziafat, was arranged by a local wealthy man at the village of Demsa in southern Bangladesh to seek divine blessings for his dead forefathers.

Nearly 5,000 people attended the feast, which featured of a dish prepared with rice, beef and lentils, witnesses said.

"We have admitted more than 100 patients with vomiting and loose bowels," said a doctor at a hospital near the main port city Chittagong, 300 km (188) miles southeast from the capital Dhaka.

Two hundred others were either admitted to different clinics or were being treated elsewhere, a police officer said.

The cause of food poisoning was not immediately known.
