DHAKA, March 24 (Reuters) - Bangladesh security forces have detained four Islamist militants and seized explosives, the police said on Saturday, in a crackdown ahead of next month's hanging of two top rebel leaders.

The militants were picked up from northern Jamalpur district late on Friday with a cache of weapons and explosives, including 80 grenades, a police officer said.

Authorities have launched a hunt for militants ahead of the planned execution of Shayek Abdur Rahman, chief of the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen, and Siddikul Islam Bangla Bhai, the head of the Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh.

The two were sentenced to death for carrying out a series of bomb attacks across the country in 2005, killing at least 30 people and wounding 150, including judges, lawyers and police.

The executions are to be carried out in April.

The Islamists have been fighting for introduction of sharia law in the mainly Muslim but democratic nation.
