BELGRADE, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Serbian and U.S. agents seized 2.8 tonnes of cocaine destined for European markets on Thursday on a ship in the Atlantic, Belgrade daily Blic reported on Friday.

A number of arrests were made on board the ship and in Serbia, many of them Serbian citizens, the paper quoted an unnamed source as saying. The record haul of cocaine was seized en route from South America to Europe, it said.

Earlier, Serbia's Tanjug news agency said the joint operation was part of an international effort to crack down on the illegal drugs trade.

"The value of the seized cocaine is estimated at 120 million euros, while it could reach 250 million euros if sold on the streets," it quoted a security services statement as saying.

U.S. anti-narcotics authorities say organised crime groups use Serbia as a transit point for cocaine from South America and heroin from Turkey for shipment into Western Europe. (Reporting by Gordana Filipovic; Editing by Angus MacSwan)
