VIETNAM NEWS

-- More than 400 people attended the first general conference of the Grace Southern Baptist General Confederation since the war ended in 1975. The government granted a licence to the Vietnam Baptist Church a year ago.

-- Traffic police said enforcement of a Dec. 15 regulation making it mandatory for motorbike riders to wear a helmet helped decrease the number of traffic accident deaths last month.

-- Bird flu has infected 110 ducks in the northern province of Thai Nguyen, the second outbreak there this month. Thai Nguyen and Tra Vinh province in the Mekong Delta are on the government's bird flu watchlist.

-- The Vietnam Environment Protection Fund will grant interest-free loans and provide financial support worth a combined 75 billion dong this year to help deal with pollution.

-- The environmental police and rangers seized a wild cat, listed among rare species, and several other wild animals at a restaurant in Hanoi, the second discovery so far this month after the authorities nabbed a car carrying two live tigers.

-- The government released details of a telecommunications development plan which includes instructions to major service providers to invest in sea cables and base transceiver stations.

-- Contamination of the Saigon River by industrial and domestic discharge has risen alarmingly, but Ho Chi Minh City agencies had yet to take action, tests by the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Tokyo University of Japan showed.
