-- Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung ordered ministries, agencies and local authorities to take urgent steps to contain the spread of bird flu.

-- One third of Vietnamese high school students failed their final examination this year, a significant rise from just 8 percent last year, the Education and Training Ministry said.

VIETNAM INVESTMENT REVIEW

-- Foreign traders without a presence in Vietnam may export or import directly, according to a government decree issued in May, part of the country's WTO commitments.

-- U.S. investors Shaw Stone & Webster International Inc. and Gannon Corp., have expressed interest in Vietnam's third refinery in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

-- Vietnam plans to refine 1.5 million tonnes of sugar by 2010 from 1.24 million tonnes in the 2006/2007 crushing season, industry officials said at an Agriculture Ministry meeting with producers. The country processed 310,000 tonnes of sugar cane this year, up 17 percent from the previous crop.

-- Trade with China via the Mong Cai border in Quang Ninh province is expected to rise 21 percent from last year to $966 million, with Vietnam's exports, including coal, rubber, cigarettes, agro-products, fish and shrimp, reaching $324 million.

-- Vietnam would reach agreements with U.S. companies soon on the $1.46 billion Mong Duong 2 Thermal Power Plant project and the $1.5 billion Dak Nong deal for bauxite tapping and processing, an official of the Planning and Investment Ministry's Foreign Investment Department said.

-- Petrovietnam Finance Company has won permission to list 3.68 million corporate bonds, issued in July 2006, on the over-the-counter Hanoi stock market <.HASTCI>.

-- State-run Agribank, Vietnam's largest, will sign five agreements worth $1.55 billion with U.S. companies during President Nguyen Minh Triet's visit to the United States between June 18 and 23.

-- Police in the southern province of Tien Giang have released a man sentenced to death for murder in 2004 after an appeal court decided the police did not have sufficient evidence to convict him.

-- Around 20 people who had close contact with the man who died of bird flu in Ha Tay province are being tested and monitored for signs of infection, the Health Ministry said.

-- Property development firm Vincom has been granted a large plot of land in downtown Ho Chi Minh City. The company said it would invest $250 million to build office buildings and public parking lots.

-- Dung Quat, Vietnam's first refinery, will meet 33 percent of national consumption when it is put into operation in early 2009. Developers of the plant forecast initial annual revenues of around 50 trillion dong, or $3 billion.
