HANOI, Sept 25 (Reuters) - A court in southern Vietnam has handed down lenient jail terms to senior municipal officials for abuse of power in a corruption case that led Japan, Vietnam's largest donor, to suspend aid temporarily.

Huynh Ngoc Si, former head of the East-West Highway project in Ho Chi Minh City, got three years in jail and his deputy, Le Qua, two years, online VNExpress newspaper (www.vnexpress.net) reported. Prosecutors had demanded up to six years.

They were found guilty on Friday of renting an office to Japanese consultancy firm PCI and sharing the rent of more than $61,700 among staff of the project, VNExpress said.

They got a relatively lenient sentence because of their earlier contribution to society, the court heard on Friday.

Tokyo suspended assistance in August 2008. The Japanese foreign ministry said in February that Tokyo would resume aid after the detention of the two officials. [ID:nT319447]

Japan, the world's second-largest economy, will grant $1.5 billion in aid to Vietnam in 2009, surpassing the record $1.1 billion in 2007, state media quoted Japanese ambassador to Vietnam Mitsuo Sakaba as saying this month. (Reporting by Ho Binh Minh; Editing by Jan Dahinten)
