Iranian forces kill 10 rebels near Turkey -media

TEHRAN, May 30 (Reuters) - Iran's Revolutionary Guards killed 10 armed "anti-revolutionary" rebels during a three-day operation this week in a northwestern area close to Turkey, Iranian news agency ISNA reported on Wednesday.

"In an operation that started two days ago ... in a surprising action and by using precise intelligence actions, our forces were able to kill 10 anti-revolutionary rebels," ISNA said.

The report follows the Iranian Intelligence Ministry's announcement on Saturday that it had uncovered spy networks, mostly near its western borders, working for U.S. and British intelligence services.

Iran has often accused the United States and Britain, which led the invasion of neighbouring Iraq in 2003, of seeking to undermine the security of the Islamic Republic by supporting rebels operating in sensitive border regions.

ISNA said this week's operation took place near the town of Salmas in West Azerbaijan, a province inhabited mainly by ethnic Azeris as well as some Kurds.

Iranian Kurdish rebels linked to Turkish Kurd guerrilla group the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) usually operate in other parts of the province.

The rebels' equipment included satellite phones, ISNA said, adding the operation was continuing.
