KARACHI, 20 April 2009 (IRIN) - An Aga Khan University (AKU) health programme offering quality health and socio-economic support to squatter settlements in Karachi has won an award.

Set up in 1985, the programme covers communities in Karachi with a combined population of 85,000.

Under the programme students, nurses and doctors provide basic health care services and "engage with communities for research and service projects that cover issues ranging from illiteracy and environmental degradation to domestic violence and women's issues," according to AKU.

The prize was awarded by the Tallories Network http://www.tufts.edu/talloiresnetwork/ and the MacJannet Foundation http://www.macjannet.org/ (both connected to Tufts University, USA).
