EGYPT: 19th case of bird flu detected

Officials in Egypt's Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Thursday that a new case of the H5N1 'bird-flu' virus has been detected in the Upper Egypt town of Beni Suef, bringing the total number of infections in the country since March 2006 to 19.

ISRAEL: Negev Bedouins fight to stay on land

In the Negev Desert village of Twail Abu Jarwal, a Bedouin boy is hammering away at the roof of a new tin shack in the setting sun. Around him are the twisted ruins of the Talalka tribe's 22 homes and a few animal shacks.

IRAQ: Kurdistan, low in violence but lacking services

Unlike other parts of the country, the three-province autonomous northern region of Kurdistan is not the Iraq of roadside bombs and beheadings. It is relatively safe and well-protected by an experienced security force. Locals and foreigners alike can walk around freely and there is even an active nightlife.
