JOHANNESBURG, 21 April 2009 (IRIN) - The World Bank has approved US$44.6 million in credit from the International Development Association to Mozambique as part of a $72.4 million health care project.

Implementation of the five-year Health Service Delivery Project (HSDP) by the Mozambique government is planned to reduce the incidence of malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and child and maternal mortality.

The project will finance the construction of about 25 health centres, with staff houses, boreholes and solar panels, in the three northern provinces of Cabo Delgado, Niassa, and Nampula.

The remainder of the project costs will be contributed by the Canadian International Development Agency ($15.6 million), the Russian Federation ($7.9 million) and the Swiss Development Cooperation ($4.3 million).
