JOHANNESBURG, 29 January 2009 (
IRIN
) - A start has finally been made by the South African government to fulfill a long-standing promise to pull down the notorious apartheid-era hostels, where thousands eke out a living in squalid conditions.
Built to house a migrant labour force, the hostels remain inner city eyesores, providing inadequate housing for large numbers of families, as well as short-term dwellers.
