KABUL, 15 April 2009 (IRIN) - Flash floods due to heavy rain have killed at least 19 people and damaged hundreds of houses in different parts of the country over the past two weeks, Afghanistan's National Disasters Management Authority told IRIN on 15 April.

Local officials in Badakhshan and Daykundi provinces (in northeastern and central Afghanistan respectively) are warning of shortages of food and clean water and the risk of diseases breaking out in flood-affected areas.
