Indonesia says to scale down route of Olympic torch

JAKARTA, April 10 (Reuters) - Indonesia will significantly shorten its leg of the Olympic torch relay in the capital Jakarta following a request by Beijing over security concerns, a sports official said on Thursday.

The April 22 leg had originally been due to pass through large stretches of the bustling city, but now would be restricted to the vicinity of the Bung Karno Sports Complex in central Jakarta.

"It is because of security and traffic concerns," said Sumohadi Marsis, chairman of the Olympic torch organising committee in Jakarta.

Marsis said the change had been requested late last month by the Beijing Organising Committee of the Games and relayed by the Chinese embassy. (Reporting by Telly Nathalia; Writing by Ed Davies; Editing by David Fogarty)
