BAGHDAD - Iraqi soldiers killed one gunman and detained 47 other suspects in different areas of Iraq in the past 24 hours, the Defence Ministry said. TIKRIT - Gunmen killed the mayor of a district in central Tikrit, 175 km (125 miles) north of Baghdad, on Wednesday, police said. BAGHDAD - Five bodyguards who work for Iraq's acting minister for tourism and antiquities were wounded when Iraqi soldiers opened fire on their convoy in western Baghdad on Wednesday, the ministry said. The minister was not in the convoy and the incident was under investigation. BAGHDAD - U.S. forces detained 12 suspected insurgents during operations targeting al Qaeda in central and northern Iraq, the U.S. military said.
