BAGHDAD, Jan 27 (Reuters) - U.S. forces killed 14 insurgents in an air strike near Baghdad early on Saturday after some of the militants had tried to escape troops closing in on them, the U.S. military said in a statement.

The military said a foreign fighter safe house was destroyed in the operation.

"Intelligence reports indicated that a foreign fighter facilitator responsible for conducting multiple attacks on Iraqi and Coalition Forces was operating in the area," the statement said.

Diyala province, where the raid took place, is an insurgent stronghold where clashes between security forces and Sunni militants are frequent.
