Power supply returns to Russia's Olympic contender

MOSCOW, Feb 1 (Reuters) - Power supplies were restored on Thursday on Russia's Black Sea coast which includes an Olympic contender, the city of Sochi, after strong winds, wet snow and ice damaged electricity lines, officials said.

"At present all customers in the Sochi energy region are connected and receive power," energy provider Kubanenergo said in a statement.

A regional Emergency Ministry official, Sergei Kudinov, told the NTV television channel that the emergency status in the affected areas of Krasnodar region could now be lifted. In some areas, though power supply remained limited, media reported.

Major disruptions hit water supplies and heating as well as rail and air traffic on Tuesday after strong winds, wet snow and ice damaged electricity lines.

Sochi competes with South Korea's Pyeongchang and the Austrian city of Salzburg in the race to host the 2014 Winter Games. The International Olympic Committee is due to inspect Sochi later this month before announcing a winner in July.
