Jan 2 (Reuters) - The number of Iraqi civilians killed in political violence edged to a new record high in December, data from Interior Ministry officials obtained exclusively by Reuters showed on Tuesday.

The ministry's statistics are not published officially, and are widely viewed as only a partial record of violent deaths but nevertheless indicative of the trend over time.

Here is a breakdown of the 2006 figures, as obtained each month by Reuters:

Note: Annual totals provided by ministry officials do not tally with monthly figures due to subsequent revisions.
