BAGHDAD, Dec 3 (Reuters) - Gunmen killed a senior adviser to Iraqi Interior Minister Jawad al-Bolani in western Baghdad on Monday, police said.

Major-General Fawzi Mohammed Hussein was killed and his driver wounded in the attack in Baghdad's al-Jameaa district. Bolani is an independent Shi'ite in Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's divided, Shi'ite-led government.

Violence across Iraq has dropped sharply in the past two months but U.S. military commanders say it remains too high, with sectarian attacks and indiscriminate bombings an almost daily occurrence. (Reporting by Wisam Mohammed; Editing by Timothy Heritage)
