BRUSSELS, Feb 5 (Reuters) - The European Commission will propose legislation to force car makers to lower carbon dioxide emissions from new cars to an average of 130 grams per km by 2012, a European Union source said on Monday.

The car makers will contribute with that figure to an overall emissions goal of 120 g/km for new cars by 2012 that will be aided by the use of biofuels and other technology, the source added.
