MOSCOW, Feb 6 (Reuters) - Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov appeared in public with a black eye and a large bruise on his forehead on Tuesday, saying he had suffered a skiing accident.

"To avoid all unnecessary talk and guesses about my appearance I would like to say that skiing down a slope has led to certain changes in my appearance," Luzhkov, 70, told Ria Novosti news agency.

Vesti24 TV showed him looking tired as he addressed a city council meeting. The bruise on his bald forehead resembled the famous birthmark of Mikhail Gorbachev, the last Soviet leader.

Luzhkov, mayor since 1992, has transformed the drab Russian capital into a bustling city and is popular among Moscovites. He is married to Russia's richest woman, Yelena Baturina.
