Lindh killer to serve out sentence in Sweden

STOCKHOLM, Feb 6 (Reuters) - The man who stabbed Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh to death in 2003 will not be allowed to serve out his sentence in Serbia, his parents' homeland, Swedish authorities said on Tuesday.

Mijailo Mijailovic, jailed for life for the murder despite a plea of insanity, had applied to serve out his sentence in Serbia rather than Sweden, saying he had received threats in prison.

The Swedish Prison and Probation Service said it had rejected his transfer on the grounds that Serbian authorities could not say what Mijailovic's sentence might be commuted to in Serbia.

Mijailovic has the right to appeal the decision, the Swedish authorities said in a statement.

The murder of the popular Lindh, a 46-year-old mother of two widely tipped to become the next Swedish prime minister, shocked a nation still haunted by the 1986 shooting of Prime Minister Olof Palme.
