TAL AFAR, Iraq, Oct 7 (Reuters) - At least 14 people were killed and 13 wounded on Saturday when a car suicide bomber hit an Iraqi Army checkpoint in the northern town of Tal Afar, police said.

Colonel Kareem Khalaf from the Tal Afar police said 10 civilians were among the dead.

In March, U.S. President George W. Bush held up Tal Afar, 420 km (260 miles) northwest of Baghdad, as an example of progress being made in Iraq after U.S.-led forces drove out al Qaeda militants in a 2005 offensive.

The attack is the fourth suicide car bomb targeting Iraqi police and army in two weeks. In May, a suicide car bomb killed 17 in a busy market in the town.
