Jet makes emergency landing for suspected overdose

LISBON, Feb 7 (Reuters) - A woman died from a suspected drugs overdose and a man was critically ill after a plane had to make an emergency landing in the Azores because the couple were showing signs of drugs use, a Portuguese airforce spokesman said.

He said the airliner, flying from Cancun in Mexico to Birmingham in central England with about 280 people on board, made the unplanned stop late on Tuesday on the island of Terceira so the English couple could go to hospital. A spokeswoman at the hospital of Angra do Heroismo in Terceira said the woman died, while the man was still in a critical condition "probably due to the use of high quantities of cocaine".

She did not identify the couple, but said the pair were in their early 20s.
