Greek police fire teargas in clashes with hooligans

ATHENS, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Greek riot police on Thursday fired teargas to disperse Greek and Serbian hooligans attempting to enter a stadium in the northern city of Thessaloniki ahead of a European soccer match, police said.

A group of Red Star Belgrade supporters whose team was playing local club Aris for the UEFA Cup was joined by dozens of Greeks, including self-styled anarchists, attempting to force their way into the stadium without a ticket.

"This group of about 100 then attacked police with firebombs and stones. They were very well prepared for this," a police official said.

There were no reported injuries.

The clashes came hours after two Red Star supporters were stabbed and hospitalised in the city centre.

Many of the Greeks were Olympiakos Piraeus supporters who had travelled north for the match, police said.
