ISTANBUL, Dec 9 (Reuters) - Turkish police have detained a lawyer who identified himself as the leader of al Qaeda in Turkey and nine other suspects, state news agency Anatolian reported on Saturday.

Police carried out the operation in Istanbul, Ankara and the western province of Izmir.

Turkey has suffered several attacks blamed on al Qaeda. In November 2003, more than 60 people were killed in bombings of two synagogues, the British Consulate and the bank HSBC's office in Istanbul.
