BELFAST, March 9 (Reuters) - The largely Protestant Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and mainly Catholic Sinn Fein had their best showings ever at this week's Northern Ireland assembly ballot, final results showed on Friday.

The pro-British DUP won 36 of the 108 seats, compared to 30 at the last assembly election in 2003. Sinn Fein won 28 seats versus 24 in 2003. Allied to the Irish Republican Army (IRA) it wants a united Ireland.

In third place was the moderate Ulster Unionist Party. It saw its share of seats fall to 18 seats from 27. The moderate Catholic party, the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) also slipped to 16 seats from 18. The cross-community Alliance Party, in fifth place, won seven seats compared to six in 2003.
