PARIS, Jan 10 (Reuters) - The European Commission's plan to make deep cuts in the bloc's greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 are bold but achievable, but require tough policy decisions, the head of the International Energy Agency said on Wednesday.

"I think it is ambitious but realistic... We support that," Executive Director Claude Mandil told Reuters in an interview.

"That being said, it will not arrive alone without strong policies in efficiency improvement by backing where possible an increase in nuclear and also an increase of renewable," he added.

Earlier on Wednesday the Commission said it wanted to cut emissions by at 20 percent by 2020 from 1990 levels in what it billed as the world's most ambitious targets for fighting climate change.
