THE IRISH TIMES

- Cut-price filtered water is to be made available to Galway city residents as part of a series of measures aimed at alleviating the ongoing crisis caused by the contamination of the drinking water supplies.

- Spending on education became a key election battleground yesterday as the Minister for Education Mary Hanafin unveiled a range of new commitments and the opposition accused her of unrealistic "auction politics."

IRISH INDEPENDENT

- The government was facing a new round of major industrial unrest last night after teachers voted to seek better pay. It comes with just weeks to go to the general election and with the country's nurses escalating their action today with a series of work stoppages at three hospitals.

- Burgers and chips for 160 American soldiers were taken under garda escort to Shannon Airport yesterday because the airport restaurant was closed. "Operation Fast Food" was organised by U.S. army officers using a fast food outlet in Shannon town to feed their soldiers.

IRISH EXAMINER

- The number of people caught drink driving this Easter weekend increased by more than 100 compared with the same weekend last year.

- Fans of rock giants REM were last night warned they could be refused entry to the band's Dublin sold-out shows if they buy one of 122 stolen tickets.
