U.N. restores food aid to Uganda war victims

KAMPALA, May 11 (Reuters) - Emergency contributions have enabled the United Nations World Food programme (WFP) to restore food rations to more than 1 million people displaced by a rebellion in Uganda, the WFP said on Friday.

WFP was forced to cut rations in April for 1.3 million people displaced by fighting between the government and Lord's Resistance Army rebels to 40 percent of minimum daily requirement. That left many at risk of malnutrition, it said.

"WFP will be able in June to restore rations to their normal levels," WFP country director Tesema Negash said in a statement.

Villagers fleeing the 20-year-old Ugandan conflict have been unable to till the fields around their camps for fear of attack by marauding guerrillas.

WFP said money came from the United States ($32 million), Britain ($13.7 million) and the European Commission ($6.8 million), plus smaller contributions from Canada and eight European nations.
