Truck kills 10 Gambian ruling party militants

BANJUL, Jan 14 (Reuters) - At least 10 people were killed in Gambia on Monday when a truck ploughed into a crowd of supporters of the ruling APRC party who were campaigning for municipal elections in the tiny West African country.

The victims, most of them young men, were trying to cross the road at Serekundanding, 35 km (22 miles) west of the capital Banjul, when the truck hit them, killing eight people on the spot, eye-witnesses told Reuters.

Two people were later pronounced dead at Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital in Banjul. Six others were reported to be in a critical condition.

The driver has been arrested and charged with rash and negligent driving.

The supporters of President Yahya Jammeh's ruling Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC) were campaigning ahead of municipal elections scheduled for January 24, which it is widely expected to win. (Reporting by Pap Saine; Editing by Daniel Flynn and Mary Gabriel)
