Anarchists burn foreign diplomat's car in Athens

ATHENS, April 14 (Reuters) - A Greek anarchist group claimed responsibility for firebombing a car belonging to the Saudi Arabian embassy in Athens on Monday, causing minor damage, police said.

The car, which had diplomatic licence plates and no country markings, was set ablaze by home-made gas canister devices around 0100 GMT, a police official said. It was parked on an Athens street.

"The group, which called themselves the "Subversive Cell", claimed the attack was in response to the arrest of a suspected criminal involved in a bank robbery last year who is set to go to trial this week," said the official, who declined to be named.

The group made the call to a private television station, the official added.

Cars belonging to diplomats, businessmen and politicians have often been attacked by self-styled anarchists in Greece, and more than a dozen have been set on fire in the past year. (Reporting by Tatiana Fragou, writing by George Hatzidakis)
