JOHANNESBURG, Jan 15 (Reuters) - South African police have arrested a 17-year-old white man suspected of opening fire on an informal black settlement, killing three people, a police spokesman said on Tuesday.

The victims were a 3-month-old child, a 13-year-old boy and a man in his 30s, police superintendent Louis Jacobs told Reuters. Seven people were wounded, he said.

Some media suggested the attack could have been racially motivated, a sensitive subject in a country scarred by decades of white minority rule.

Jacobs said the suspect entered the squatter camp near Swartruggens in North West province and "started randomly shooting".

Police launched a manhunt leading to the arrest of the suspect, who had his father's gun in his possession. The father was taken into custody for the illegal possession of a firearm, said Jacobs. (Reporting by Michael Georgy; editing by Elizabeth Piper)
