LONDON, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Six British soldiers were wounded in rocket and mortar attacks on their base in the southern Iraqi city of Basra on Thursday night, the Ministry of Defence said on Friday.

"There were three separate attacks from indirect and direct fire on Basra palace and as a result one soldier sustained serious injuries and five others minor injuries," a ministry spokeswoman said.

Four of the soldiers were evacuated to a field hospital for treatment while two were treated at their base, the spokeswoman said.

Britain has some 7,100 troops stationed in and around Basra. Rival Shi'ite factions are fighting for control of the city, Iraq's second biggest.
